FUN IDEAS
DECORATING CUP CAKES
A great idea if its raining, is to make twice the quantity of cup cakes than there are children, and set up a table large enough to seat all the children, and give the children 2 cupcakes, and pop plenty of cake decorating supplies in the middle of the table, and let them decorate their own cakes. Make up a good quantity of frosting, and divide into portions, and colour each portion a different colour.
Buy some liquorice and cut into small strips, that can be used as eyebrows, a mouth or hair. Coloured sprinkles, silver sugar balls, tiny musk rounds, chocolate sprinkles, even rice bubbles!
Use your imagination, and they will use theirs.
DECORATING TREAT BAGS
You could also do this for their treat bags.
Using plain brown paper sandwich bags, and again all supplies in the middle of the table. Including a glue stick for each child.
Colour pencils, crayons, felt pens, glitter, stickers, ribbons, plastic jewels, just about anything you can thing of that is bright and fun.
Most of the discount stores have packs of craft items for very little.
GAMES ON A BUDGET
TOSSING GAME
This game can be played as individuals or in teams.
Take a few tea-towels, one for each team if there are lot of children at the party, and fill with sand, tie the tea towels with different coloured ribbon for each team. If there are only a few children and no teams, pieces of string would be quite sufficient.
Using the garden hose as a line for the children to stand at, or if you’re at the park, then a few twigs will do, and have them toss the bags of sand as far as they can.
If in teams, then have the children toss in heats. The winner if each heat will play the next round, and so forth until you have a winner, or if your feeling really generous, then a winning team.
EGG AND SPOON RACE… WITH A TWIST
Boil the eggs first !!
Rather than running in a straight line from the start to the finish, set an interesting course for the children to weave around or walk around. You could use garden chairs, wheelbarrows, garden pots and buckets. Just about anything. The longer the route the better.
Guaranteed to bring lots of laughs from the children and the grown-ups
3 LEGGED RACE
This really old classic is great fun, and can be played in teams, individually or even as a relay race if there are plenty of children.
Simply tie the left leg of one child, and the right leg of another child together with strips of cloth or old business ties are good ( you can pick them up at charity shops for next to nothing ) and whoever wins are the winning “couple”
As for the Egg and spoon race above, you could make a more interesting course, which will be sure to take longer than the usual straight line version!
